      <image:title>Our Vision - Helping Menstruators in Need</image:title>
<image:caption>The average woman spends $13.25 on menstrual products every month. It may not seem like much at first glance, but that tallies up to $6360 in a woman’s lifetime. So it’s no surprise that low-income women and girls struggle with obtaining these necessities. A Reuters survey found that 66% of low-income women could not afford basic hygiene products: over 1 in 5 of those women had the problem every single month, reporting being forced to use cloth, rags, toilet paper, and sometimes even diapers taken from public bathrooms. This can lead to further problems for these women, such as infections and diseases for which treatments can cause up to hundreds of dollars. Despite requests from the community, many local homeless shelters, food banks, and family centers are often unable to purchase hygiene products due to strict budgeting. As a result, the monthly struggle of these menstruators continues for a lifetime. The Pink Project is dedicated to raising funds to purchase hygiene products for donation. Through the sale of donated books, custom items, and many other fundraisers, we plan to purchase menstrual products that we will personally deliver to shelters across the Bay Area.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Britain Abolishes Tampon Tax</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Sanika Sharma Published: March 21, 2021 Britain entered this new year by making an enormous progressive change for menstruators all over the nation. On Friday, January 1st of 2021, following its departure from the EU, Britain became the latest country to transform its retail measures on menstrual products, abolishing the so-called “tampon tax'' and no longer classifying the products as nonessential. The abolishment of the tax is part of a wider government initiative to end period poverty, attempting to increase the accessibility of sanitary products despite financial constraints. “Research released in May from Plan International U.K., a children’s charity, found that three in 10 girls ages 14 to 21 struggled to afford or get access to sanitary products during the coronavirus lockdown,” according to a New York Times article. Since last year, the British government’s initiative to make period products more attainable has also included supplying sanitary products free of cost in schools, colleges, and hospitals. Since 2016, 10 states in the United States have eliminated the tax in a similar attempt, including California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Utah, and Washington. Hopefully, the list continues and other states follow the example Britain has set. Blog Source: nytimes.com Image Source: theguardian.com</image:caption>

      <image:title>Period Poverty in India</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Nithya Raghunath Published: March 21, 2021 Prejudice against menstruators is commonplace in India, where periods have long been taboo and considered dishonorable. Those who menstruate are ostracized from basic activities. The social stigma around menstruation surpasses socioeconomic class, caste, and gender. Because of the lack of conversation around menstruation, 71% of adolescent girls in India are unaware of menstruation until they get it themselves. The entrenchment of everyday religious dogmatism establishes cultural shame around menstruation as a social norm. An average of more than 40% of students in India miss school as a consequence of social stigma, embarrassment, and the inaccessibility of products. According to Global Citizen, period poverty can be defined as, “the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, handwashing facilities, and/or waste management.” According to a report by the Indian Ministry of Health, only 12% of menstruators have access to proper period products. The other 88% are dependent on unsafe materials, such as rags, cloths, hay, sand, and ash out of desperation. This can expose them to communicable diseases, such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), vaginosis, skin irritation, vaginal itching, and more. The issue of period poverty in India is being addressed by advocacy groups. For example, the ‘Swachh Bharat: Swachh Vidyalay’ campaign was introduced in 2014, which ensures that every school in India has a functional and maintained ‘WASH’ facility. These facilities include the availability of soap, a private space for changing, water for washing, and disposal facilities for menstrual products. Additionally, the government launched 100% oxy-biodegradable sanitary napkins at a low cost; however, this initiative has not been able to initiate nationwide awareness. Menstrual health is not just a women’s issue, as more than 2.9 billion people globally lack access to basic sanitation services. There is a strong restriction among men to learn about these issues as a consequence of the deeply entrenched social stigma. Educating boys and girls at a young age about menstruation promotes healthy habits and breaks the stigma around the natural process. It is just as crucial to include transgendered men and non-binary menstruators in this conversation, as this issue transcends gender. As Sanjay Wijeskera, former UNICEF Chief of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene once said, “Meeting the hygiene needs of all adolescent girls is a fundamental issue of human rights, dignity, and public health.” Blog Sources: BBC.com, feminisminindia.com, globalcitizen.org Image Source: scmp.com</image:caption>

      <image:title>Scotland Makes Period Products Free</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Sagel Provancher Published: March 21, 2021 As of January 12, 2021, Scotland became the first country to make all period products free for all menstruators. The Period Products (Free Provision) Bill was first introduced in April of 2019 by Labour MSP Monica Lennon, a Scottish politician that has been campaigning to end period poverty for the last five years. Due to her work, this bill now requires the government to allow anyone who needs period products to get them free of charge. In addition, all schools, colleges, and universities are also required to provide free period products in their bathrooms. From the bill, the Scottish government has used millions of pounds to fund schools, colleges, and universities to provide tampons, pads, and other reusable products. Four million pounds were also used to provide feminine hygiene products in public places such as sports clubs. As an act of “goodwill,” the owners of many pubs and restaurants are also providing sanitary products in their restrooms for free. You may ask, why does period poverty even matter and how does it affect people? “Period poverty is when those on low incomes can’t afford, or access, suitable period products” (Diamond). According to a study done by Plan International UK, 10% of girls in the UK are unable to afford sanitary products and an additional 15% have struggled to afford sanitary products. Menstruators all over the world often feel embarrassed by their periods and by buying sanitary products for themselves. They are uncomfortable discussing their periods with teachers and parents due to the stigma surrounding the topic. This bill spurred conversations in government chambers that are often ignored. According to NPR, “members of the Scottish Parliament discussed endometriosis and heavy bleeding, why toilet paper and bins for menstrual products are required in restrooms, and the...support the legislation had drawn from both men and women.” Many of these topics are rarely spoken about if ever, but this bill is changing circumstances all across Scotland. <image:title>Covid-19's Affect on Period Poverty</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Shekinah Taylor Published: March 28, 2021 Lack of access to menstrual products: Companies that distribute goods and services to menstruators, specifically for hygiene, have been interrupted and their trading has been debased due to the pandemic restricting their ability to maximize the number of resources that they can provide. In remote regions, this issue is amplified even more because menstrual products are already more difficult to obtain compared to urbanized areas. A common flawed perspective that is unfortunately sustained throughout today's society is that menstrual supplies are not essential products. This faulty point of view compels many supply chains that usually produce hygiene products to feel no obligation to produce them. These contributing factors all lead to the result of a severe shortage of period products and a lack of access to them for menstruators. Price Inflation: The global supply chains that are still producing sanitary products have unfortunately inflated the prices of their products as a result of the pandemic's effect on the economy, The initial fear Covid incited in many people caused them to stockpile important goods like sanitary and menstrual products. Due to the demand for such products being so significantly high, accessing them became a struggle for a vast amount of consumers since so many people hoarded them, but the demand also led to a further increase of price inflation by global distributors. Resources and Safety: Many healthcare resources have put all of their focus into dealing with Covid, but this has diverted them away from combatting health issues that involve hygiene. For instance, water, hygiene, and sanitation services have been catering to the pandemic. Due to these vital resources revolving around Covid, menstruators struggling are not provided with the same resources that would allow them to properly and safely manage menstruation as they usually would. Education is essential to learn how to use menstrual products and to learn about menstrual cycles in general. Covid and the lockdown have led to a block of information about menstruation due to the immense amount of information provided about Covid-19. This block of information plays a detrimental role because it inhibits many menstruators from learning how to safely and properly handle their period. <image:title>Women's History Month 2021</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Shekinah Taylor Published: March 31, 2021 Overview : The month of March is dedicated to highlighting the contributions remarkable women have made that have shaped society and allowed it to progress. All throughout history and even in the present-day, women often do not receive the recognition they deserve for their initiatives and instead are dismissed. In March we acknowledge the women from the past who did not listen to the status quo and curated a path for change, the women today who are making an impact whether it be in politics or science, and the women in our lives who influence us daily. History : Women’s history week actually came as a precursor for Women’s history month. In 1978, women rallied together and organized to celebrate women’s history in the week that corresponded with March 8th, international women’s day. This idea became supported by several communities around the U.S and many people began to celebrate women’s history week the following year. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter officially declared the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. This commemoration subsequently led to Congress passing the Public Law 100-9 which proclaimed March as Women’s History Month. Importance and Influence : Since many women’s accomplishments have often been overlooked, having time to learn about them and their impact is vital for keeping society from moving backward. The change many historical women pushed for is what helps so women today be able to pursue almost anything. Despite past women’s significant influences, women today are still not done advocating for change. Being influenced and using historical women’s persistence as inspiration, women today continue to fight for the equity and progression of our society. <image:title>Ireland Blog</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Nithya Raghunath and Amani Khanna Published: May 22, 2021 In Ireland, store chain Lidl announced it would offer free period products in stores nationwide to those struggling to afford them as an effort to tackle period poverty, which has risen during the pandemic. Last year, Scotland passed legislation ensuring period products are available to all who need them, and students in New Zealand will be able to get free menstrual products in school. Lidl becomes the major retailer to make period products available for free nationwide. Period poverty has been raised as an issue by Irish politicians. For example, in 2019, The Irish Women’s Parliamentary caucus called on the Irish government to provide free sanitary products in schools, universities, hospitals, refuges, homeless services, detention centers, and police stations. The forum also called for menstrual education to be available in all public buildings. For those living in low-income communities, period poverty can mean dropping out of school, leaving them at a much greater risk of child marriage, exploitation, and child pregnancy. Only a small fraction of these menstruators can afford sanitary products, and those who can’t have to improvise by using newspapers, leaves, and other unsanitary materials. In a 2018 survey by Plan International, about half of girls in Ireland aged 12 to 19 reported having difficulty buying period products. Ten percent of girls surveyed said they were forced to use a less sanitary alternative, and some reported missing school out of fear. Additionally, the survey finds that half of the girls are embarrassed by their periods, while nearly a third did not know what to do when their period started. In terms of menstrual equity, Lidl’s initiative represents a tremendous step forward, as low-income Irish menstruators now have the means to obtain free period products. While this achievement is significant, we cannot ignore that government inaction plays a notable role in the perpetration of period poverty. Establishing menstrual equity on a global scale can ensure a more equitable future for all. Blog Sources: nytimes.com and reuters.com Image From: twitter.com</image:caption>

      <image:title>Importance of Menstrual Hygiene</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Nithya Raghunath Published: December 13, 2021 Every month, 1.8 billion people across the world menstruate. Menstruation is not just a biological process, but a social one as well that has major social and economic implications on menstruators. Millions of these girls, women, transgender, and nonbinary people are unable to manage their periods in a dignified, healthy way. The menstrual cycle is the monthly process of discarding blood and tissue from the uterus and typically begins in pre-adolescence and ends with menopause. Many menstruators do not have access to the correct scientific facts and hygienic practices during their menstrual cycle. Menstrual hygiene can be characterized as menstruators using clean menstrual products to collect blood that can be changed in privacy as often as necessary during the menstrual period, using soap and water to wash the body as required, and having access to dispose of used menstrual products. Menstruation necessitates the availability of resources to absorb or collect period blood, facilitate personal hygiene, and dispose of waste (ideally with privacy). Maintaining good menstrual hygiene can prevent menstruators from an infection in the reproductive or urinary tract and ensures that menstruators can deal with their periods with dignity. Investing in menstrual hygiene is a cost-effective development intervention that has long-term benefits for the reduction of child and maternal mortality. Poor menstrual hygiene management can have a very serious impact on menstruators’ health. Understanding how your period works, why it happens and when to expect it, and how to properly manage it are key factors needed to manage a menstrual cycle. Irritation of the skin causes discomfort and can potentially lead to dermatitis, a skin condition in which the skin swells, turns red, and can become sore and blistered. The introduction of bacteria into the urethra can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs). Here are some practices to maintain good menstrual hygiene: Changing your pad or tampon frequently. During your period, menstrual products can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which is why it’s advised not to wear one pad or tampon for more than 4 hours. Track your period frequently. Your menstrual cycle is an important indicator of your overall health. Don’t be afraid to track it. Wash properly and often. Blood creates a favorable environment for bacteria to thrive during your menstrual cycle, so rinsing the genital area frequently is recommended. Dispose of used hygiene products. Improper disposal of used menstrual products is a risk to you and the people around you during your menstrual cycle. Wrap your menstrual product well and throw it away; do not flush it down the toilet. Always wash your hands after changing menstrual products as it can cause infections from viruses like Hepatitis B. Menstrual hygiene protects an individual’s dignity and builds confidence, specifically among adolescents. A lack of menstrual hygiene has extensive consequences for millions of people, as it restricts their mobility, personal choices, undermines their safety, and causes stress and anxiety. Awareness is the first step to ensure avoiding potential health risks. <image:title>Women's History Month 2022</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Alexandra Castaneda Published: June 5, 2022 Overview: The month of March is designated to celebrate and honor the contributions of women to historic events, culture, and day-to-day living. Almost everywhere in history and present-day, you see women overlooked and dismissed for their major accomplishments and initiatives that they deserve recognition in. For this reason in 1981 Congress finally passed Pub. L. 97-28 proclaiming that on March 7th, 1982 it will begin its first “Women’s History Week”, eventually leading Congress in 19887 to pass an additional resolution that allowed the President to declare March of each year as “Women's History Month”. Menstruation Statistics: There are an estimated 16.9 million people who menstruate living in poverty in the United States. The research found that almost two-thirds of low-income women in the U.S. could not afford menstrual products in the last year, while nearly half sometimes had to choose between buying food or menstrual products. Unfortunately, one in five American girls misses part or all of their school days due to their periods. Global Menstruation Statistics: BIPOC individuals are more likely to experience period poverty due to systemic racism, which creates barriers for BIPOC individuals to access the products that they need. In Nepal and Afghanistan, 30 percent of girls report missing school during their periods. In India, over 20 percent of girls drop out of school completely after reaching puberty. Importance: It’s important to remember as we celebrate the month of March to recognize other women in need. As seen from the statistics above women all around the world are in need of menstrual products. Advocating this situation and aiding women with menstrual products can help hundreds of thousands out there. Supporting this change can encourage women to make even more changes in the future. <image:title>Transgender Day of Visibility 2022</image:title>
<image:caption>By: Harshini Jayaprakash Published: June 5, 2022 Overview: Thursday, March 31 marked the 13th annual international Transgender Day of Visibility. Trans Day of Visibility was founded by transgender activist Rachel Crandall, who was inspired by the fact that there was no holiday in existence dedicated to honoring the achievements and contributions of transgender people. The day celebrates the resilience and success of trans and gender-nonconforming individuals and raises awareness about their rights. Although the day has passed, it is still vital to recognize and assist the struggles that the transgender and gender-nonconforming communities face. Menstruation is not exclusive to women. Not all women menstruate and not all menstruators are women. Some transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals who menstruate can feel alienated and may avoid purchasing them all together when menstrual products are categorized as “women’s products.” The hurdles some trans men and gender-nonconforming people who menstruate endure include; the high cost of period supplies, lack of access to the products, safety concerns, and inadequate medical care. The cost and taxation of menstruation products could disproportionately affect transgender people, as they experience poverty and unemployment at higher rates in comparison to cis-gendered individuals. Importance and Influence: Trans Day of Visibility is crucial as intolerance, hate, and harassment the transgender community has faced have been rampant for decades. The stigma around trans people still effectively clouds their contributions. It is crucial to raise awareness about the work that still must be done for trans justice.
